The Mercenary suits players who'd rather hold their ground than spend every fight trying to stay out of reach. You've got sturdy defenses, useful control skills, and two weapon styles that feel different once enemies start pushing back. Before putting your Mistfall Hunter Gyldenblod toward upgrades, decide how you actually want to fight. Sword and Shield rewards patience and well-timed counters. Warhammer asks you to commit to heavier swings and make each opening count. Neither choice fixes poor positioning, though. You'll still need to know when to step forward, when to defend, and when a target simply isn't worth chasing.
Sword and Shield Gives You Room to Learn
If you're learning the class, start here. Sword and Shield lets you keep pressure on an enemy without committing to every exchange. Basic attacks build Sword Tip stacks, which feed into stronger attacks. The temptation is to keep swinging until you've got what you need. Don't. Watch what the other player or enemy is doing first. Shield Dash helps you close distance or get out of trouble, while Shield Slam creates an opening through control and slowing effects. Blade Edge adds offensive pressure and movement when the timing suits it. Against players, Perfect Blocks deserve practice. Catch an attack correctly and the brief stun gives you a chance to respond. That's often more valuable than squeezing in another ordinary hit.
Warhammer Makes Openings Matter
Warhammer feels less forgiving, but that's part of its appeal. You're trading quicker exchanges for heavy strikes, stagger, and control over grouped enemies. Earth Shaker is the centerpiece when several targets are close together. Its area damage and knockdown can give your team time to follow up instead of scrambling around separate enemies. Skull Crusher supplies burst damage when you've got a clear opening, and Hammer Dash helps you reach targets before they move away. The catch is commitment. A heavy attack that misses doesn't just cost damage; it gives your opponent time to answer. In PvE, look for opportunities to catch clustered enemies. In PvP, make sure the target is occupied or controlled before trusting a slow swing to land.
Choose Talents and Gear Around Your Weapon
For Sword and Shield, focus on Sword Edge, Blade Charge, Stacking Blade, Indomitable Will, and Rising to the Challenge. These support the stack-building approach while helping you keep fighting through pressure. Warhammer players should look at Unstoppable, Hammer of Convergence, Iron-Clad Body, and Leap Step for stronger heavy attacks, Super Armor support, and fewer interruptions. Gear deserves the same attention as skills. Health, Physical Resistance, and Defense give you more room for mistakes, while Attack Power keeps your hits relevant. Debuff Resistance is worth considering when disabling effects keep breaking your rhythm. Tenacious and Stoic lean toward durability; Valor and Wrath support offense. Pick what addresses your actual problems. More damage won't help much if you're consistently defeated before landing your attacks.
Fight for Position, Not Just Damage
In PvE, being at the front doesn't mean taking every hit on purpose. Bring enemies together when it's safe, leave teammates room to act, and keep a defensive option ready for attacks that matter. Warhammer benefits from those grouped targets, while Sword and Shield offers a steadier approach to individual exchanges. PvP is where impatience gets expensive. A ranged opponent wants you chasing across open ground, spending your movement skill, then arriving with little left to use. Don't give them that fight automatically. Work around cover and engage when you've got an opening. Shield Slam or Earth Shaker can also set up teammates rather than serve only your own damage. Getting everyone into a useful position matters more than being first to swing.
Final Thoughts
Choose Sword and Shield if you enjoy counters, steady pressure, and having defensive options while you learn. Choose Warhammer if you're comfortable waiting for an opening and committing hard when it appears. You don't need to force either style just because someone else prefers it. Upgrade gradually, pay attention to what ends your runs, and spend with a purpose. If you're budgeting around cheap Mistfall Hunter Gold, decide which equipment improvements matter before making a purchase. Resources won't replace practice. Better blocking, fewer wasted movement skills, and knowing when to stop chasing will do more for your Mercenary than another upgrade you haven't thought through.
